Chapter 8

EVA

Blake disappeared when they got back to the house. Eva took the opportunity to take a shower and wash off the grit from the ride. She didn’t see him when she went back downstairs.

They had almost kissed at the café and on the hill. What did that mean?

At least, Eva thought they had almost kissed. She couldn’t be more confused and Mac’s constant nagging wasn’t helping as she tried figuring out what was going on between her and Blake.

Maybe she could push things further. It wasn’t like they didn’t have a history. There wasn’t a time limit thing. She’d known him forever and ever and they didn’t need to get to know each other more. If they knew any more about each other, there’d be an identity crisis.

She sat at the counter, drumming her fingers and making a tap-tap sound. The house was quiet like no one else was there, but that wasn’t possible. He hadn’t left. She’d assumed he’d just gone to his room or something.

Waiting wasn’t her style. She stood and climbed the stairs, searching the upper levels for any sign of him. She came back to the stairs and furrowed her brow. Where was he? What had happened?

Taking a minute to think about where he’d gone, she ambled out to the garage. Maybe he’d gone back outside to work on his bike or organize his things. She could check on her boots and gloves and clean them as an excuse for being out there, if she needed one.

Or she could tell him she was looking for him.

If she wasn’t so nervous, she’d laugh at herself. She wasn’t that brave or she would’ve already talked to him about how she felt. She could’ve done a lot of things, if she were brazen like she wished she was.

Like leaning forward and kissing him after he’d helped her successfully climb that trail. The euphoria hadn’t faded and she hoped she’d never come down.

The garage light was off and the large door was closed. She flipped on the light and cast a cursory glance around. Nothing seemed out of order. Eva still needed to clean her bike. She’d do it after the sun went down. She hated water spots on her plastic.

She moved to turn off the light, then paused. Her bike was the only blue one in the garage.

He’d left for another ride and hadn’t told her. He must’ve left when she was in the shower and couldn’t hear the engine.

Was he sneaking away? Running away? Had she done something? Maybe she’d scared him off. Dating your best-friend’s sister wasn’t the best way to fix things when you were fighting with that friend.

Sudden anger stirred inside her. She grabbed her phone and swiped to bring up Mac’s riding jersey she used for his profile avatar. She pressed call and shoved the phone against her ear as she charged back inside.

He answered on the second ring. “Yeah, little sis, what’s up?”

“I don’t know what your game is, Mac, but you leave me out of whatever is going on between you and Blake.
